The weather of Maharashtra has been dry for a long time now. In fact, dry days have been prevailing over the region since the fag end of March. Due to constant dry days, the temperatures of the regions also shot up to settle near the 40-degree mark, surpassed by a few locations as well.

However, in the last 24 hours, Kolhapur and Solapur in Madhya Maharashtra received some showers. These rains can be associated with the trough that is extending from northeast Rajasthan to Karnataka across Vidarbha and Marathwada.

As per Skymet Weather, as this trough is likely to sustain, therefore, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected over parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada today as well. Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra may also receive isolated rain activities, however, the intensity of rains over Konkan would be lesser in contrast with that over Madhya Maharashtra.

The districts affected by these pre-Monsoon showers include Nagpur, Akola, Chandrapur, Nanded, Parbhani, Latur, Jalna, Hingoli, Nashik, Pune, Ahmednagar, Ratnagiri, and Raigad. Moreover, these rains are likely to continue until April 10.

In addition to this, as these are the pre-Monsoon season, chances of thundercloud build up and chances of hailstorms are also high in the next 48 hours. These pre-Monsoon activities over parts of Maharashtra would pull down the temperatures by two to four degrees Celsius and may become below normal. Hence, the maximums that are settling near or above 40 degrees Celsius may fall and settle below the 30-degree mark.

After 48 hours, the minimums may also fall by two to three degrees Celsius leading to comfortable morning and night. Thereafter, by April 11, we expect the weather to start clearing up and thus the temperatures would also start rising.

At this juncture, let us look at the impact of this hot weather condition on the agriculture of Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra:

Farmers are advised to harvest matured crops and keep the harvested produce at a safer place. They are also advised to provide mechanical support to fruit orchards like Banana, and Oranges to avoid the effect of the hailstorm.

To minimize evaporation in orchards and vegetables, farmers should mulch them with crop residue or polythene. As the temperatures are also likely to dip, this might increase pest population on crops and hence farmers are suggested to take measures to prevent pest and disease infestation.
