Rain in Peninsular India to bring down deficiency

September 6, 2015 12:50 PM |

Rain in South IndiaPeninsular India has been receiving widespread rainfall for the last couple of days. This could be attributed to the cyclonic circulation over Lakshadweep and adjoining region persisting as an upper air system, between 1.5 and 3.1 km above the sea level.

A trough can be seen extending from Telangana up to Lakshadweep across Karnataka. Due to this system fairly widespread rainfall, with few moderate spells are likely over South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Karnataka, adjoining Tamil Nadu and North Kerala.

Good showers are expected over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh during next 24 hours. Scattered rains are likely over Telangana, Rayalaseema, Coastal Tamil Nadu, North Interior Karnataka and rest of Kerala. Extreme southern parts of Tamil Nadu will receive isolated light rainfall only.

During last 24 hours, it has rained mostly over southern parts of Karnataka, Kerala, parts of Tamil Nadu, North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. In a span of 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Saturday, Karaikal recorded 61 mm of rain, Gulbarga 56 mm, Thiruvananthapuram 21 mm, Kochi 15 mm, Bijapur 13 mm and Kozhikode 12 mm.

This spell of rain to some extent will reduce the deficiency being faced by Peninsular India. At present Telangana is rain deficit to the tune of 27%. Here the rainfall deficiency could reduce and come down to normal levels. So far North Interior Karnataka has received 43% less rain than the normal average, while Kerala has recorded 33% less rains. The situation could improve significantly in both the above mentioned regions.
