Rain in Northeast India to increase, Meghalaya to witness heavy rainfall activity

Rain in Northeast India

The northeastern states of India i.e. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura have been witnessing god pre-Monsoon rainfall activity since the last many days. In fact, Meghalaya has received very heavy rains.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Cherrapunji recorded very heavy rain to the tune of 162 mm, followed by 75 mm in Kailashahar, in Tripura. Other places to observe moderate amounts of rain were Gangtok 26 mm, Lumding 23 mm, Aizwal 21 mm, Shillong 17 mm, Silchar 16 mm, Barapani 8 mm, Darjeeling 8 mm, Lengpui 7 mm, Agartala 5 mm, Golaghat 4 mm, Jorhat 4 mm, Tezpur 3 mm and Kohima 2 mm.

At present, a cyclonic circulation lies over East Assam. An east-west trough is also moving across Meghalaya, Assam up to Arunachal Pradesh. As this trough is sloping southwards, rainfall activity is expected to increase over extreme southern parts of northeastern states such as Tripura, Meghalaya, and Mizoram.

Other states of Northeast India i.e. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur are expected to witness moderate to heavy rains. These weather activities are expected to continue until the onset of Southwest Monsoon.

Pre-Monsoon showers are active, as southerly winds are blowing in the region from the North Bay of Bengal. Moreover, conditions are becoming favorable for further advancement of Southwest Monsoon in the coming days.
