Fairly widespread rain/thundershowers with varying intensity are continuing over the northeastern states since the last few days. While rain in most parts of India has taken a backseat, Northeast India will continue to receive rain for the next 3 to 4 days.
In a span of 11 days, Guwahati received rain for 10 days as the city recorded 3 mm, 9 mm and 14 mm of rain, respectively in last three days. Similarly, Imphal, out of 13 days, observed rain for 12 days. During this season, the entire Northeastern region in India usually receives a good amount of rainfall. The frequent spells of Western Disturbance may be the reason for rainfall in the area.
Although these WDs are of lesser intensity, but after affecting the Western Himalayas, they tend to travel along the foothills giving rainfall over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand as well as the Nepal hills. Furthermore, the system moves towards the east providing rain over West Bengal and Sikkim. Finally, it reaches the northeastern states and gives a good amount of rainfall over the area.
Southerly and Southeasterly winds from the Bay of Bengal increase moisture over the Northeastern states. At present, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over Assam and Meghalaya, which is contributing in the increased rainfall activities over these states.
Fairly widespread light to moderate rain will continue over entire Northeast India, including parts of West Bengal and Sikkim. The rainy spells have been keeping the temperatures in check and will continue to do so. Usually, the day temperatures in Northeast India hover around the mid-30s, coupled with humidity, which cause discomfort. However, the rainy spell will continue to provide comfortable weather conditions in the region.
