Northeast India has begun to see rainfall activities as had been reiterated by Skymet Weather yesterday. These rains are expected to increase in intensity as well as spread in the next 24 hours wherein May 23 and 24 will have widespread activities over the seven sisters along with Sikkim. Moreover, the states of Assam as well as Meghalaya will be the ones which would be witnessing more rainfall activity as compared to the other states.

The last 24 hours had some heavy showers in isolated pockets as well with light to moderate rains in other parts.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Goalpara saw 50 mm of rains, followed by Silchar and Rangia at 32 mm rainfall, each. Other parts that saw some rains include Gangtok 30 mm, North Lakhimpur 16 mm, Tezpur 13 mm, Chaparmukh 8 mm, Haflong 4 mm, Kailashahar 4 mm, and Guwahati 2 mm.

The reason for these rains can be attributed to the presence of a Cyclonic Circulation over Assam and the other one over Bihar. This will result in the flow of southerly and southwesterly winds over the region resulting in the enhancement of rains over the Northeast Indian region.

So far, Pre Monsoon has not been great for Northeast India with just Assam and Meghalaya remaining on the normal side and other being deficient. These showers may help in getting the deficient figures slightly better but they won’t be able to cross over to the normal stat side.
