Rain in North India likely from Friday; East India to remain unaffected

February 19, 2014 2:53 PM |

Scattered clouds hovering over the northern plains have not allowed the day temperatures to rise much but the minimums have shown marginal rise in most places. These clouds are high to medium and thus, not rain bearing. However, a cloudy sky over Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh could bring rain and snowfall over the higher reaches. Tomorrow we could expect better sky conditions but to last only for a day or so.

The cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan, coupled with the trough extending along the west coast could bring some rain in North India from 21st night onwards. North Rajasthan, parts of Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi/NCR and west Uttar Pradesh could receive some rain. The night temperatures across the plains will start rising from the 21st  and could also reach double digits. There are chances of rain and snowfall in Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh as well but effect of this system will not extend up to East India.

Temperatures in North India

In Amritsar the minimum temperature rose from 1°C on Tuesday to 7.8°C, today morning. Patiala as well showed a rise to10.6°Cfrom 9.2°C, the previous day. Several places including Delhi and Ludhiana in the northern plains have also shown a marginal drop.  Today, the Safdarjung observatory in Delhi recorded 7.1°C, a drop of more than 2 degrees from yesterday. The change in wind pattern could be attributed to this variation. Winds sweeping across the northern plains - the cool north westerly winds are slowing down, becoming variable at times and could also become easterlies. However, in East India the night temperatures have witnessed a marginal drop as the icy cold north westerly winds have not lost strength. Today the minimum temperature dropped to 5.6°C in Kanpur, from 7.4°C the day before.
