This year, pre-Monsoon rains have been scant in Tamil Nadu due to which rain deficiency in the state currently is 66%. Cyclone Fani developed over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean, then moved towards Tamil Nadu but failed to give significant rains over the state.
Currently, a trough is extending from South Chhattisgarh to Comorin areas across Tamil Nadu. Therefore, we expect light to moderate rain at many places especially over the interior parts of Tamil Nadu in the next 48 hours. The intensity of rain is going to be more over the interior parts of Tamil Nadu. Places like Vellore, Dharmapuri, Salem and Krishnagiri are expected to receive good rains. Chennai too would witness light rain or thundershowers. In fact, Chennai has not yet received any rain since the last one month except on April 22 when it observed traces of rain.
At present, the weather in Chennai is very hot and humid, and the maximum temperature yesterday stood at 38.6°C which is above normal by three degrees. Intermittent rain and thundershowers might occur over the city and adjoining areas, today and tomorrow. After 48 hours, the intensity of rains would weaken as a trough which is passing through Tamil Nadu would become frail. However, isolated rains in the region cannot be ruled out.
