Rain in Nagpur, Akola, Hingoli, Jalna soon; irrigate Groundnut and Maize

March 13, 2018 1:20 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Rains have remained on the lower side for almost the entire state of Maharashtra during the month of March. Similar kind of weather prevailed in parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada as well. The region has remained dry almost so far in March after receiving some on and off rains accompanied by hailstorm during the initial days of February.

Rains in both the regions generally occur due to the formation of a confluence zone that is the amalgamation of humid winds from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea over the region, that leads to cloud formation and subsequently to rainfall.

Otherwise, any significant weather system brewing in the Arabian Sea would also lead to rains over the region which is the case at present as well. As per Skymet Weather, the well-marked low-pressure area is over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining Sri Lanka. This system is likely to move west-northwestwards, concentrating into a Depression in the next 24 hours.

Hence, this system would affect the region in terms of rainfall over both the regions by March 15. The rains are expected to intensify on March 16 with possibilities of hailstorm as well. The rain activity is likely to continue until March 17 and the weather would start improving by late hours of March 17. However, for the next 24 hours, both Vidarbha and Marathwada regions are expected to remain dry.

The regions that are most likely to get affected by this rain and hailstorm activities are Amravati, Akola, Nagpur, Nanded, Jalna, and Hingoli.

Talking about the temperatures of both the regions, the maximum temperatures of Vidarbha and Marathwada have dropped and at present are settling close to normal. While minimums are running above normal by 2-3 degrees. These rain and hailstorm activities would, in turn, result in further dropping the temperatures.

Let’s see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Vidarbha and Marathwada:

Due to variations in temperature, pest attack may increase on vegetables. Therefore, farmers are advised to keep a watch on vegetable crops for the same along with on Groundnut crop.

Farmers are also recommended to irrigate Groundnut and Maize crop considering rainfall forecast in next 2-3 days. Moreover, it is advised to continue harvesting of Orange, Grapes, Mosambi, and pomegranate as well. Farmers should complete harvesting of Wheat, Jowar, and Safflower as well.
