The core Monsoon months have almost passed away but financial capital of the country, Mumbai is still rain deficient by 10%. out of the four months, July was the only month where good rainfall activity was observed over the city.
However, August rains were very poor as less than half of actual rains were recorded i.e. 235 mm against its normal of 585 mm. Further the same pattern continued in the month of September as well. Till now, Mumbai has only recorded 44 mm of rain as compared to its monthly average of 341.4 mm.
Prior to this, Mumbai had recorded such poor rains during September 2013, where it was still better than 2018 as it had witnessed 199 mm of rains. Now also, looking at the prevailing weather conditions, we expect similar deficiency to occur over Mumbai.
During the last 24 hours, only trace of rainfall activity was recorded in Mumbai. Although it did not help in making any major difference in the rainfall deficiency, but they kept temperatures near normal. Day temperatures were seen settling around 30˚C and night temperatures around 25˚C.
However, we now expect Mumbai rains to pick up pace. We are expecting some spells of good rains over the city, beginning on Thursday. We can expect patchy rains on September 20, intensifying September 21 onwards.
At present, a depression is seen in the Bay of Bengal and is further expected to move inland, giving good rains over eastern and central parts of India. Along with this, a feeble cyclonic circulation also lies over Konkan & Goa Coast.
Due to the combined effect of both these weather systems, we expect light to moderate rainfall activity to occur over Mumbai and its nearby areas during the next 24-36 hours. The intensity of rains would be more over September 21-22. However, as no heavy rains are expected, not much downfall in the rain deficiency is on cards for Mumbai.
