The state of Maharashtra, at last, got some relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions when some pre-Monsoon rains finally occurred over the state. In fact, it was due to increase in the pre-Monson activities over the state that forced heatwave to abate the region.

On the past day, widespread rains were recorded over South Konkan, South Madhya Maharashtra, and at a few places of Vidarbha and Marathwada.

Within the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Sunday, Ratnagiri recorded 32 mm of rains, Amravati 26 mm, Harnai 24 mm, Parbhani 16 mm, Solapur 15 mm, Ahmednagar 14 mm, Pune 10.8 mm, Chandrapur 10 mm, Vengurla 9 mm, Mahabaleshwar 4 mm, Nagpur 2 mm, and Sangli witnessed 4 mm of rains. On the other hand, Mumbai failed to record any traces of rains.

As of now, we expect the intensity of rains to increase further over parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan. The temperatures are expected to drop by 2-3 degrees Celsius over these regions, leading to comfortable weather conditions over these areas.

Additionally, scattered rains are also expected over Vidarbha. Moreover, by June 5 and 6, we expect, few heavy to very heavy rains to occur over Madhya Maharashtra region. The intensity of these rains would keep on increasing gradually over many parts of the state, particularly over Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra which would trigger the onset of Southwest Monsoon over the state between June 6 and 8.

Mumbai and adjoining regions would also continue to receive pre-Monsoon activities with increased intensity on June 8.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:

In Vidarbha, farmers are advised to complete harvesting of matured rice and keep the harvested produce at a safer place. Farmers should continue ploughing fields to expose soil to solar radiation.

In Marathwada, farmers should undertake cultivation of Kharif vegetables like brinjal, chilly and tomato in raised nursery beds. In Madhya Maharashtra, farmers should undertake nursery preparation on a raised bed for Kharif rice, finger millet, and soybean.
