The eastern state of Odisha has been experiencing good rain and thundershower activities since the last one week. Therefore, as of June 5, the state is rain surplus by 55%. Although on and off rains occurred over West Bengal as well, it is currently rain deficient by 44%.

During the last 24 hours, North Coastal Odisha and parts of Gangetic West Bengal received good rain and thundershower activities. Few intense spells also occurred over the state. Canning recorded 51 mm of rain, followed by Cuttack 29 mm, Diamond Harbour 26 mm, Darjeeling 19 mm, Guwahati 13 mm, Kolkata and Paradip 10 mm.

Now a cyclonic circulation is seen over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh. Thus, we expect light to moderate rain and thundershower activities to continue over Gangetic West Bengal and parts of Odisha. However, the intensity of rain will be light with few moderate spells over Sub Himalayan West Bengal during the next 48 hours.

Thereafter, Odisha will see decreased rainfall activity. But on and off rains will continue over West Bengal.

Normally, Southwest Monsoon marks its onset over West Bengal between June 5 and 10. And by June 10, parts of Odisha i.e. South and Coastal Odisha also witness the arrival of Monsoon.

However, this year we expect a delay of 4 to 5 days over both the states in the onset of Monsoon.
