Kerala rains

The month of May began on a wet note for Kerala. Many districts of the state have been recording on and off pre-Monsoon rains of varied intensity since the day one of the month and until the last day, there has been no looking back.

In general, also, Kerala receives a good amount of rains in the month of May although the intensity of rains varies from time to time. The intensity and spread of rains are on a rise in May which is happening this year as well.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Friday, Alappuzha recorded 41.8 mm of rains, Kozhikode 37.2,  Kottayam 4.4 mm, Kochi 2.6 mm, Kannur 13.6 mm and Thiruvananthapuram 1.8 mm.

As per Skymet Weather, a trough is extending from Southeast Arabian Sea to North Interior Karnataka across Kerala. This weather system has resulted in rains over the so-called ‘God’s Own Country’, Kerala.

As of now also, as the weather system is likely to persist over the region, the intensity of rains is expected to increase over the state in the coming two to three days. However, true to their characteristics, these pre-Monsoon rains would not affect the temperatures much as they would occur during the late afternoon or evening hours and by that time, the temperatures have already peaked.

Skymet Weather further expects that on and off rains would keep on drenching the state until the arrival of Southwest Monsoon over the region which is likely to make an onset before time this year.
