Kerala has been receiving intermittent scattered pre-Monsoon rain so far. The intensity of these weather activities has not been very high. Moreover, in the last spell that took place, Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry including Chennai, Thanjavur, Karaikal, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam remained almost dry.
The state of Kerala is the rainiest pocket of South India during the pre-Monsoon season with May being the rainiest month.
This time however, rainfall has been on the lower side with the city staring at a deficiency this month.
By the end of last month, the deficiency was running close to 22%. The rain deficiency is only building up and is at 41% till now.
In the last 14 days, 70% of the contribution has been added by the month of May alone.
Not on a single day the rainfall figures managed to cross the normal figures.
This kind of pattern was witnessed back in 2012 and 2013 when May had recorded a deficiency of -65% and -50% respectively.
The forecast doesn’t seem very encouraging for the rest of the month and for the season as only scattered rains are expected for the next one week over the state.
Possibly, the last week might bring some hope in terms of rain and may help in covering up the deficiency.
