Updated on August 31, 01:10 PM (IST):
The sub-division of Gujarat along with Saurashtra and Kutch has received very less Monsoon rains in the month of August. For instance, Gujarat has received only 39.7 mm of rain against the monthly normal of 267.2 mm. While Saurashtra and Kutch has observed a paltry 13.4 mm of rain against the monthly average of 121 mm.
June and July were however, very good months for the region in terms of rainfall. According to the data available with Skymet, rainfall in Gujarat during the month of June was surplus by 5%, while Saurashtra and Kutch had observed a surplus of 59%.
During July the surplus in Saurashtra and Kutch dropped marginally to settle at 42%, while Gujarat saw the surplus rise to 11% during the month.
The reason for subdued rain in August can be attributed to the absence of any significant weather system in the Arabian Sea. Gujarat normally receives rain during the Monsoon season either from the western arm, a low pressure area or a depression.
In the month of June two major weather systems – Cyclone Ashobaa and deep depression – had given good rains in the region. But no such weather system has been observed in the month of August.
This spell of dry weather somehow came to an end with light scattered rain in the region on Sunday. Surat in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday received 37 mm of rain. Valsad observed 20 mm, Amreli 3.6 mm and Baroda 1.2 mm.
A trough running from South Pakistan up to western parts of Gujarat is feeding moisture to the region from the Arabian Sea. South and East Gujarat are expected to receive light to moderate rain for another 48 hours.
