Southwest Monsoon ended with a rain surplus of 10% for the state of Tamil Nadu & Puducherry. Further also following the same pattern, good rains have continued in the month of October as well.
In fact, after the first half of October, Tamil Nadu & Puducherry are 51% rain surplus. Reason for these good rains can be attributed to various weather systems which continued to affect Tamil Nadu including a cyclonic circulation over Southwest Bay of Bengal and the north-south trough running across Interior Tamil Nadu.
Although after Severe Cyclone moved towards Odisha, rains had reduced for two to three days over Tamil Nadu. However, now rains have once again resumed over many parts of Tamil Nadu and are particularly intense over the interior districts.
At present, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over South Tamil Nadu and a trough is extending up to North Interior Karnataka. In view of these weather systems, during the last 24 hours, scattered light to moderate rains occurred over many parts of Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, Chennai and adjoining areas i.e. North Coastal Tamil Nadu remained mostly dry.
Further, due to the persistence of same weather systems, we expect good rains to continue over many parts of Tamil Nadu for the next three days i.e. till October 18. Thereafter, intensity of rains will reduce but scattered light rains will still continue over parts of Tamil Nadu.
Talking about the capital city, Chennai, in the coming two to three days, it will also receive short spells of rain.
