Tamil Nadu continues to record moderate to heavy rains during the last 24 hours as well. However, intensity of rains was more over southern parts of the state.
In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Saturday, Coonoor recorded 53.4 mm of rain, followed by Kanyakumari 45.2 mm, Pamban 41.2 mm, Kodaikanal 28.7 mm, Karaikal 27.9 mm, Palayamkottai 22.2 mm, Tiruchirapalli 17.4 mm, Tondi 15.2 mm, Madurai 8.6 mm, Coimbatore 8.5 mm and Dharmapuri 5 mm.
Capital city of Chennai too recorded rains of varying intensity however last 24 hours saw decline in intensity. The city has recorded 8 mm of rainfall as compared to 33 mm of rainfall on Friday.
However, weather conditions remain favourable for rains to go on for some more days. According to Skymet Weather, Chennai is expected to record moderate rain and thundershowers with isolated heavy spells during the next 24 hours as well. In fact, entire Tamil Nadu would see rain activity of similar intensity, particularly southern parts would continue with heavy rains.
These rains can be attributed to the persistent cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal off the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. The depression over Arabian Sea is also providing strength to the system. Both the weather systems are likely to stay put and thus, resulting in rains over entire Tamil Nadu.
The weather conditions are almost similar to what of the Northeast Monsoon and we expect this three-month long season to make an early onset this season.
Northeast Monsoon is the rainy season for entire Tamil Nadu including Chennai. The city records over 60% of its annual rainfall During this season, with November being the rainiest. In fact, as of today, for the month of October Chennai’s Egmore Nungbakkama Observatory has already recorded 128 mm of rain.
