Southwest Monsoon happens to be the least rainy for the state of Tamil Nadu as well as the city of Chennai due to the state lying in the rain shadow area. It is during the Northeast Monsoon season when these regions witness good rains. However, rains will be seen in Tamil Nadu including Chennai for the next 48 hours.
The month of June was very poor for the state with the deficiency being quite large. Moreover, July continued to be so for a long time. However, as break Monsoon conditions came in, rains were seen in Tamil Nadu which further brought down the rain deficiency to 29 percent.
Presently, a Cyclonic Circulation can be seen off the Tamil Nadu Coast in Southwest Bay of Bengal which has given some rainfall. In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Chennai has seen 8 mm of rainfall with adjoining areas recording light showers
Now, favourable conditions persist for rains to occur in the northern half of Tamil Nadu, especially the coast.
This activity will be seen during the next 48 hours, wherein rains will be more during the next 24 hours, particularly during the night and morning. Meanwhile, Chennai will see good rains as well during this time with moderate showers in pockets.
