Light to moderate rainfall has been experienced mainly over coastal areas of Tamil Nadu so far. But now, both the intensity and spread of the rain is likely to increase.
A trough of low continues to persist from North Bay of Bengal to South Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coast. Easterly winds are also strengthening and hence we can expect rainfall activity over this part of the country to increase now.
Several parts of south coastal as well as interior Tamil Nadu are likely to receive moderate with light showers at many places. Rain will also touch parts of North Tamil Nadu. This is the first good spell of rain over the state after a gap of several days. Also, this is possibly the last spell of Northeast Monsoon rain over the rain ravaged region.

As reiterated by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, rains have finally made a come back to Tamil Nadu including capital city of Chennai.
Scattered light to moderate rain and thundershowers with isolated heavy showers have been going on since late evening over several coastal areas such as Tiruvanmiyur, Guindy, Royapettah, Chennai and Madipakkam.
According to Skymet, a trough of low is extending from South Bay of Bengal up to Sri Lanka coast. Under this influence, easterly winds over the region have become more prominent, resulting in good rain activity over the region.
As per the latest forecast by Skymet, rain activity is likely to increase during next 24 hours and some good showers can be expected over Tamil Nadu on December 27. Intensity of rain will be more over south coastal parts, while Chennai will witness light rain only. However, isolated heavy showers cannot be ruled out.
Updated on December 24, 2015 01:2 PM (IST): Cyclonic circulation in Andaman Sea to give rain in Chennai, Tamil Nadu
A fresh cyclonic circulation is brewing in South Andaman Sea, which is likely to bring the Chennai rains back. Northeast Monsoon will revive over Tamil Nadu in coming days. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the system is likely to gain strength and intensify into a trough of low during next 24 hours.
The system will be now moving in west direction and will reach Sri Lanka by December 26.Thereafter, it will start affecting weather over Tamil Nadu December 27 onwards. Initially, it will bring light rain over the state that will increase gradually.
Intensity of rain will be more over southern districts of Tamil Nadu such as Palayamkottai, Karaikal, Kanyakumari and Pamban. We can expect some light to moderate rain with isolated heavy showers over few places.
Rains will also return over Chennai in wake of this system. However, intensity will be confined to light with few moderate spells.
As per Skymet, the system will be of very short span and will clear the region by December 28.
Presently, another cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka coast and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal is impacting weather over South Tamil Nadu. But the system is now expected to clear away from the region very soon.
Tamil Nadu has recorded excess rainfall during Northeast Monsoon season, so far. However, last two weeks have been rain deficient. This fresh weather system is likely to improve the situation.
From October 1 till December 16, the state has recorded 660.1 mm of rain against the normal rains of 413.6 mm. With this, state has witnessed 60% of excess rains so far.
