Interior parts of Tamil Nadu have been witnessing good rainfall for the past two to three days. This has been occurring due to the formation of a north south trough which is extending from North Interior Karnataka to Comorin across Tamil Nadu.
On the other hand, the city of Chennai has remained dry, but few spells of rains were seen over the nearby districts including Tirupati. In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Udhagamandalam saw 15 mm of rains while Dharmapuri recorded a good 21 mm of rains.
Now, rainfall activity is likely to continue over Interior Tamil Nadu for another 24 to 48 hours. Thereafter, a trough is expected to form from West Central Bay of Bengal to Tamil Nadu coast which will induce rain activities over Coastal Tamil Nadu including the city of Chennai.
Thus, rains are expected to commence over the city of Chennai around the night of September 15. In fact, on and off rains are expected to continue for the subsequent two to three days. Rain intensity will be more on September 16. Many coastal districts of Tamil Nadu along with Chennai are expected to see light to moderate spells. The possibility of one or two heavy spells cannot be ruled out.
