Rain in Chennai early next week as low-pressure area intensifies

May 14, 2016 3:49 PM |

Rain in ChennaiIn absence of any pre-Monsoon showers, Chennai has been battling oppressive hot and dry weather conditions for more than a month now.

However, a four-day long spell of good rains is approaching the capital city after the next 48 hours. The rain activity will be on account of a low-pressure area brewing in the Bay of Bengal.

According to Skymet Weather, a low-pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a well-marked low pressure are during next 24 hours. The system will further intensify into a depression.

While intensifying, the weather system will move closer to Tamil Nadu coast and by May 16, several districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai will start recording light to moderate rain and thundershowers. This may also impact the Tamil Nadu state assembly elections which are scheduled on May 16.

Further by May 17, intensity of rain will increase significantly and few areas may record heavy showers as well. Rains will be accompanied by high-velocity winds over Chennai along with other coastal areas.

Gradually, the weather system will move northwards along the coast and may re-curve in north-northeasterly direction drifting away from Tamil Nadu coast. However, on and off rains will continue over the city till May 19 but with reducing intensity.

Weather is likely to clear up completely by May 19 and subsequently, dry weather will make a comeback over the city.

Sea will also become rough during this time and caution must be exercised by fishermen from venturing out from May 16 onwards.
