Bihar and floods are synonymous with one another, especially during the Monsoon season. In the past few days, northern parts of Bihar close to the Nepal region saw floods including Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi etc.

The state of Bihar was the rainiest state till June with 111 percent of excess. Moreover, the state saw double the usual rains during the first Monsoon month. Rains were excess because of the Monsoon trough being closer to the foothills, resulting in continued heavy weather activity in the state.

Rains reduced thereafter, but the state did see flooding conditions. In the past few days when the state saw floods was not because of rains in that region, but because of rainfall activities in Nepal as well as the mountain areas and catchment regions. Thus, the inflow of the water has been from there for floods to have made an appearance.

Now, rainfall activities are expected to come up again today as well.

The reason for flooding in this particular region can be attributed to the presence of several rivers including Kosi, Gandak etc., which not only receive water from the Nepal region but also from the catchment areas and water released from dams, which causes them to overflow.

Rainfall activity is expected to increase again as the axis of the Monsoon trough will get closer to the foothills. This may cause waterlogging in some areas as well. In fact, Heavy rainfall expected over many districts like West and East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Supaul, Araria, Bhagalpur, Purnea, Katihar and Kishanganj.
