Rain hampers relief operations in Uttarakhand

July 8, 2013 3:38 PM |

The ordeal of people of Uttarakhand does not seem to end. Incessant rains over the last two days have hampered relief operations in the state. Choppers carrying relief materials cannot be flown to flood ravaged villages of Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts due to the bad weather.  Major roads highways are still damaged making it difficult to ferry relief materials by trucks to flood-hit areas.

Uttarkashi is the worst hit district in the state. Relief materials have not reached far flung areas of the district even 20 days after the deluge. The continuous rain is making matters even worse. Removal of debris and cremation of bodies has also become difficult in the Kedarnath valley due to the continuous downpour.

The state government is therefore planning to requisition choppers which can be flown even in bad weather to take food supplies to affected areas in Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi and Chamoli districts.

Meanwhile, Water level in Bhagirathi river has been constantly on the rise with the villages of Tiloth and Joshiyara facing the danger of being inundated. People living in houses located along the banks of the river have been asked to move to safer places.

The situation is going to prevail in Uttarakhand for a couple of days after which the intensity of rain may reduce.
