Punjab and Haryana

Since the last many days, dry weather conditions are prevailing in the state of Punjab and Haryana. But during cold early morning hours, shallow to moderate fog was witnessed in many places. The minimum temperatures decreased while the maximums increased due to bright sunshine during the day time.

At present, an active Western Disturbance as an upper air Cyclonic Circulation lies over the northern parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan region. With this, it's associated induced Cyclonic Circulation lies over the central parts of Pakistan region.

During the next 24 to 48 hours, both these weather systems will be moving east-northeastwards. Due to this, we expect light rain and thundershower activities to occur at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana. Thereafter, the intensity of the rain will be increasing and light to moderate rain with thundershower activity will be affecting many places in Punjab and Haryana. Hailstorm activity is also very likely at isolated places over both the states.

The northern parts of both states will be receiving more rainfall as compared to the southern parts. Places like Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Chandigarh, Roopnagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Ambala, Panchkula, Yamunanagar and Kurukshetra will experience moderate spells of rain and thundershowers along with hailstorm activities by January 13.

While the other parts of these states like Bhatinda, Moga, Firozpur, Ludhiana, Sirsa, Hisar, Bhiwani, Rohtak, Faridabad, Karnal and Sonipat are likely to receive light rain and thundershowers during the same episode.

All these rains will be very beneficial for the present crops like Wheat, peas, grams, mustard and sugarcane.

From January 14, the weather conditions will start clearing but again as in quick succession, another Western Disturbance will be approaching. Due to this weather system, we further expect rainfall activity in both the states between January 15 and January 17.

The night temperature will be increasing by 2-4 degree Celsius. Over the northern parts of these states, the fall in temperatures can be observed from January 13 onwards while on January 14, the minimum temperature will decrease marginally while day temperature will rise.
