Rain, hailstorm in Uttar Pradesh Feb 20 onward; major threat to Mustard crop

During the last 24 hours, mostly dry weather has prevailed over the state of Uttar Pradesh. However, due to the moving of a Western Disturbance across higher latitudes, isolated light rain activities have occurred over northern parts of Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, shallow to moderate fog has prevailed over parts of the state, while sky conditions were seen as ‘obscured’ during early morning hours.

Presently, the cold air mass is entering the state and mixing with moist air mass. Thus, foggy conditions with obscured sky will persist during morning hours. Meanwhile, dry weather conditions will continue during next 24 to 36 hours. Thereafter, light rain and thundershower will occur at some places of West Uttar Pradesh.

For next 24 hours, there will be no major change in minimums, while day maximums are expected to increase gradually. Further, the night temperatures will also start increasing after 48 hours.

The present Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir will move in east/northeast directions. Thus, weather activity will reduce on February 19 as another Western Disturbance in quick succession will make an entry.

In wake of the above approaching system, rains will start February 20 onward over western and northern parts of Uttar Pradesh. During this time, places such as Muzaffarnagar, Bijnore, Sarhanpur, Moradabad, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Bareilly, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar as well as Lucknow will experience on and off rains. Moreover, there are also chances of hailstorm at one or two places.

These rains will prove beneficial for crops such as Wheat, Gram and Peas. However, occurrence of hailstorm may cause major damage to Mustard crop.
