Northeast India weather

Winter rains ended on a poor note for entire Northeast India. However, activities picked up quite well in the first week of March, with Nagaland topping the list in being rain surplus by 200%, according to the data available with Skymet between March 1 and 7. Rest all places were either in normal, excess or largely excess category. The only exception to this situation was Meghalaya which remained largely deficient.

Since the past three days, the northeastern states have been observing quiet weather conditions. In the absence of any rains, the surplus has been completely consumed and most places are now standing deficient under the ‘normal’ category, wherein Arunachal Pradesh is deficient by 16%, while Tripura and Mizoram are deficient by 6% and 5% respectively (+/- 19% is normal).

Although an Anti Cyclone is present over East Assam, it is inclined more towards Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha. Because of its unfavourable position, no significant Confluence Zone has developed in order to give rains over the northeastern states. Therefore, in the absence of significant weather system, we expect next two days to be completely dry in Northeast India.

It will be around March 15, when an Anti Cyclone will develop over central parts of Bay of Bengal, causing confluence of winds over Northeast India. Thus, we can expect scattered rain and thundershower activities along with strong gusty winds March 15 onward over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura and Mizoram.

The intensity of these rains will be at its peak on March 17, 18 and 19 and chances of lightning strikes and heavy hailstorm activities during these three days cannot be ruled out. Moreover, the heavy nature of rains will help the northeastern states to improve their deficient figures.

March 19 onward, as the weather system will move away eastwards, rains will start receding and by March 20, we expect weather to go completely dry over all the northeastern states.

The beauty of Northeast India blooms post any rainy episode. The entire region becomes an abode of heaven and the northeastern states observe tourists flocking form different corners of the world. In general, November to May are the best months to visit Northeast India as weather becomes quite pleasant. So if you want to witness nature at its best, pack your bags and head towards the seven sisters.
