The first phase of Lok Sabha Election 2014 will kick-start on Monday from Assam and Tripura in the northeast region of the country. Skymet Meteorology Division India predict partly cloudy to cloudy sky in Assam on Mnday with chances of light to moderate rain due the influence of cyclonic circulation which is fetching moisture from the Bay of Bengal. Though it may prove to be a hindrance, voters queuing up to select their member of parliament from Tezpur, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Koliabor and Lakhimpur will get some reprieve from the warm weather as temperatures will fall and settle in the early thirties.

According to a Press Trust of India report, an electorate of 64,41,634, including 31,20,067 women, will exercise their franchise at 8,588 polling stations. For the first time in the North East region and the third time in the country after Kashmir and Bihar, all polling booths have been declared smoking free. Security measures have been tightened for the polls with additional companies of security forces deployed. The next phase of the polls will be held on 12th April for three Lok Sabha seats.
