Updated on September 10, 2015 1:25 PM (IST): Rain-deficit Maharashtra receives heavy Monsoon showers

Heavy Monsoon showers lashed several parts of rain-deficit state of Maharashtra on Wednesday. Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan region recorded moderate to heavy showers during last 24 hours. While, Vidarbha region received rain with reduced intensity.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, several weather systems around Maharashtra are affecting the weather over the western state. An east-west trough is extending from cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal up to Coastal Maharashtra. This trough has given rise to the wind shear which has enhanced the rain activity over the region.

Meanwhile, another trough is running from Madhya Maharashtra region to Lakshadweep Islands that is also influencing the intensity of rain.

As per Skymet's forecast, moderate to heavy showers will continue over the state including cities such as Mumbai during next 24 hours. Monsoon showers will continue for next 4 to 5 days thereafter but with varying intensity.

This spell of rain will bring down the rain deficiency substantially, which earlier has been as high as 50%. As on September 09, Marathwada is rain deficient by 48% followed by Madhya Maharashtra at 42% and Vidarbha region at 17%.
