Pre-monsoon activity has lashed central parts of the country. Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh have had the bigger share. The states of Odisha and Chhattisgarh witnessed light and scattered weather activity. This unusual and prolonged activity has continued for the last 4 days, since 05th April, with varying intensity and spread. This wet spell is likely to continue, albeit shifting pockets, over the next 4 days.
A cyclonic circulation is marked over North Madhya Maharashtra and Southwest Madhya Pradesh. An east-west trough has been extending across Marathwada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. Also, another north-south trough is marked cutting across Karnataka, Rayalaseema, and reaching the Interiors of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. There is also an anticyclone over the Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha-Andhra coast. This feature has been persistently fueling warm and moist air to the east-west trough, triggering prolonged spells over the entire region.
The weather activity is likely to vacate Odisha and Chhattisgarh after 2 days, albeit temporarily. However, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh will continue to receive intermittent activity for the next 4 days. Parts of Telangana and North Karnataka will remain in the peripheral and receive mild weather. Madhya Maharashtra also will largely skip the action. Vidarbha and Marathwada will be favorites for intense and fairly widespread thunderstorms during the period. Over Madhya Pradesh, the southern half of the state, bordering Maharashtra and the southwestern region will be more vulnerable. East Madhya Pradesh will escape the bout and remain largely dry.
The possibility of hailstorms can not be ruled out in at few places and more so over Marathwada. Lightening strikes may be accompanied by strong gusty winds and hailstorms. This may not be desirable for the standing crops. The heat wave conditions, which had earlier come up over parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada have vacated the region and are unlikely for the next one week. For the state of Maharashtra, the weather activity may continue again, after a brief pause on 14th April.
