Rain and snow to Welcome 2014

Rain and cold day conditions are likely to persist in North India till new year eve. From Jammu & Kashmir to Delhi and adjoining northwest plains, the entire region will observe cloudy weather due to a Western Disturbance (a low pressure area) expected from Saturday onwards. There is a high possibility of rain in Delhi during this period, while Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are likely to witness snowfall. Punjab, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh could also witness the same weather conditions at the start of 2014.

The clouds will lead to fall in day temperatures in North India, as witnessed earlier last week when levels had dropped 6 to 7 degrees below normal leading to cold day conditions. Meanwhile, nights in the northwest plains will be less cold as minimums will rise due to cloudy skies.

Western Disturbance is a weather system that emanates from the Mediterranean Sea and adjoining Atlantic Ocean that travels east northeastwards to reach the Himalayan region. Due to cold climate during winter in India they tend to move more southwards across the latitudes than during summers, bringing winter rain in India. In the higher reaches, it leads to snowfall as well.
