The northern hills of the country have been witnessing rain and snow from last many days thereby eradicating the elongated dry spell that the region has been observing since December.
The recent Western Disturbance which was affecting the Western Himalayas also brought in some rain and snow spells. During last 24 hours as well, the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir including regions like Qazigund, Banihal, and Srinagar observed good rain and snow.
In last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, Banihal in Jammu and Kashmir recorded 32.4 mm of rain and snow, Batote 22.2 mm, Bhaderwah 47 mm, Gulmarg 7.4 mm, Jammu 17.2 mm, Katra 4.2 mm, Kukenag 36.6 mm, Kupwara 5.6 mm, Leh 0.9 mm, Pahalgam 36.4 mm, Qazigund 24.2 mm, and Srinagar witnessed 5 mm of rain and snow.
However, the weather system has now moved away thus reducing the intensity of rain and snow over Jammu and Kashmir also including Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The weather is likely to become clear and the sun is expected to come up thereby leading to rising temperatures. All these factors may also result in avalanches in the higher reaches of the Kashmir.
As per Skymet Weather, whenever the temperature rises in the hill states, the fresh snow that got accumulated over the hills tends to melt. Moreover, as it is loose in nature, it is more prone to slipping, paving way for calamities like avalanches.
Hence, people are advised to take extra caution against the snowfall that could result in avalanches.
