The hilly states of North India witnessed a drastic change in weather conditions during the month of January. The region witnessed heavy rain and snowfall due to back to back Western Disturbances.

Now, a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to approach Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. Under the influence of this system, we can say that on and off wet spell will continue to lash the region.

In the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Saturday, Gulmarg recorded 11 mm of rainfall along with snow. Rain and snow also occurred at places like Kupwara which received 11 mm, Pahalgam 8 mm, Qazikund 5 mm and Srinagar 14 mm.

The Western Disturbance is presently marked over Afghanistan and adjoining Pakistan. This system is expected to move in an east-northeast direction.

With this, rain and snowfall is expected to intensify over the hilly states namely Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. This spell is likely to maintain its grip over the region for at least next 3-4 days.

During the next 24 hours, moderate spells of precipitation are expected at most places over the states, with isolated heavy falls also possible. The chances of avalanche cannot be ruled out which is why tourists and residents are advised to stay alert and take precautionary measures.
