Rain and snow show to continue over hills of North India

Another spell of rain and snow has started over the hilly states of North India, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In fact, during the last 24 hours, many parts of these states have recorded heavy rain and snow with isolated very heavy in some parts.

This fresh spell of rain and snow can be attributed to an active Western Disturbance over North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir.

Once again the famous tourist destinations like Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Jammu, Qazigund and Manali witnessed snowfall.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Saturday, Banihal recorded 60 mm of snowfall, followed by Katra 65 mm, Pahalgam 48mm, Qazikund 82 mm, Srinagar 62 mm and Batote 51 mm. Other areas that received heavy snow include Jammu 35 mm, Kukernag 41 mm, Kupwara 28 mm and Manali 15 mm.

The ongoing spell is expected to continue for another 24 hours. Moderate to heavy rain and snow will occur over Jammu and Kashmir, while light to moderate rain and snow is expected over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The possibility of heavy snow over higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir cannot be ruled out.

In fact, weather officials issued landslides and avalanche alert for some areas of these aforementioned states. Due to these weather conditions, Jammu-Srinagar highway remains closed.

In wake of this, maximum temperatures have dropped significantly over the region. The drop in temperature is expected to continue during the next 24 hours as well.
