Rain and snow have been going on over the hills of North India and more is expected. More showers are expected due to the persisting Western Disturbance. While the higher reaches see just snowfall it is the medium reaches of 6000-7000 feet, that are impacted by multiple factors of weather including rains, thundershowers, snowfall as well as hailstorm.
The situation in the region of Joshimath has worsened due to the sinking problem that has been there. Allegedly, as per reports, the cracks have worsened due to the construction and digging going on in power plants around the area.
In the state of Uttarakhand particularly, the water coming through the cracks above the ground known as aquifers, which has been the case in Joshimath and adjoining areas. In fact, the major problem did occur due to the water oozing out of those cracks, puncturing the aquifers. As per reports, that has subsided and fresh cracks are not widening.
However, on account of the extended weather activities, the opposite is likely to take place. Snowfall, hailstorm and rains may be seen. Flow of water down the slopes of mountains has lot of momentum and force.
Thus, a large volume of water that will flow on the surface, will further seep into the cracks resulting in pressure, which may furthermore worsen the problem. Cracks may widen or develop afresh on the weakened surface along the aquifers.
