The hills of North India, as compared to the other winter years have witnessed very less weather activity in terms of both rain and snow. So much so that the region has only observed one episode of widespread and rain and snow around December 11 and 12.

Thereafter, the weather has remained mostly dry over the three states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. There have been occurrences of Western Disturbances over the region on a frequent basis, but these weather systems have not been strong enough.

Thus, these disturbances have only been affecting the higher reaches of the three hilly states. Even now, a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to start affecting the Western Himalayas January 16 onward. Thus, in view of this system, the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh may witness isolated light rain and snowfall activity.

However, the mid and lower reaches of both the states along with most of Uttarakhand will remain mainly dry during this period. Sky conditions may become cloudy to partly cloudy in isolated pockets. Along with this, minimums may witness a slight rise during this period while no change in maximum temperatures is foreseen.
