Northeastern states have been reeling under dry weather conditions post the withdrawal of Northeast Monsoon. The region observed light rains during the early days of the month but still had stayed away from overcoming the existing rainfall deficiency.
In last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday, both Arunachal Pradesh and Assam have witnessed light to moderate rainy spells. Anni observed 6 mm of rains, Passighat 3 mm and Dibrugarh witnessed light spells of 1.4 mm. In fact, the possibility of light snow accumulations over the higher reaches of Arunachal Pradesh also exist.
As per Skymet Weather, the reason for these rainy spells can be attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation that persists over Meghalaya and adjoining areas. Moreover, on account of this weather system, more light showers and snow are expected to continue for another 24 hours.
Thereafter, the weather is expected to clear off. The maximum temperatures that are at present on the lower side are expected to rise after the passage of the snow and rain. Moreover, the minimums that have been settling 3-4°C above normal are also expected to remain low. This weather pattern is expected to continue until February 11.
However, in spite of these rainy spells and thundershower activities, there does not seem any significant changes in the already prevailing rainfall deficiency over the ‘seven sisters’ states’. The northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, are still expected to stay rain deficient. Hence, we can say that the rainfall deficiency will continue to prevail over the region.
