Rain and snow in hills to bring down temperatures in North India

December 4, 2015 3:40 PM | Skymet Weather Team

December has arrived but winter is still eluding the people of North India. Though a little chill can be felt early in the morning or late evening, the temperatures are still recording above normal. Punjab is the only region where strong wintry conditions have set in in some parts.

The reason for delayed winter can be attributed to weaker Western Disturbances, which haven’t given good amounts of rain and snow in the hills of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

Back to back Western Disturbances which affected the western Himalayas recently obstructed the flow of cool northerly winds towards the plains. Winter chill will not be felt until and unless there is heavy rain and snow in the hills.

Now we expect a strong Western Disturbance to start affecting the western Himalayan region from December 9 to December 12. It will give moderate to heavy rain and snow in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

Punjab, Haryana and Delhi may also receive rain or thundershower during this period. This will lead to drop in temperatures in the region.

Along with the WD a trough extending from Gujarat to North Madhya Pradesh will give good amounts of rain in Gujarat, south-east Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Uttar Pradesh as well.
