Rain and dust storm to continue in parts of Punjab and Haryana until May 23

May 17, 2019 10:40 AM |

Since the beginning of May, around four Western Disturbances with their respective induced Cyclonic Circulations have approached the Western Himalayas. In the wake of continuous approach by these systems, on and off pre-Monsoon activities have been going on over parts of Punjab and Haryana since the beginning of this month.

According to Skymet Weather, currently a Western Disturbance is present over the hills of North India. And an induced Cyclonic Circulation is over West Rajasthan. Humid winds from the Arabian Sea are also feeding moisture to the region, leading to formation of convective clouds known as Cumulonimbus, in meteorological terms.

Due to these systems, some parts of Punjab and northern parts of Haryana are all set to experience rain and thundershower activities today.

We expect, dust storm and thundershowers along with gusty strong winds to occur over Amritsar, Barnala, Bathinda, Faridkot, Fatehgarh Sahib, Fazilka, Firozpur, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Mansa, Moga, Muktsar, Pathankot, Patiala, Rupnagar, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, Sangrur, Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar and Tarn Taran during next four to six hours. Similarly, northern districts of Haryana such as Hisar, Karnal, Kurukshetra and Ambala will experience rain and thundershowers.

These pre-Monsoon weather activities will continue in parts of Punjab tomorrow as well. Thereafter, the weather will clear up, but isolated thunderstorm or light rain may continue to be observed in some parts of Punjab.

A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to approach the Western Himalayas around May 21. During this period, rains will occur with increased intensity over both the states.

Thus, we can say on and off rainfall activity will continue with varied intensity until May 23 over Punjab and Haryana. In the wake of these rains, temperatures will remain mainly below or near normal and we do not expect heat wave to re-appear anytime soon.
