Punjab, Haryana, Delhi witness last spell of pre-Monsoon rains

June 23, 2016 2:09 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Southwest Monsoon has already covered most parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (just short of West Uttar Pradesh), and the hills of North India as well. Probably just a week left for Monsoon to cover entire northern plains. Only the last post of West Rajasthan will be left out.

The plains of North India including Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR have been witnessing on and off pre-Monsoon activities for the last few days. A hot and humid day gives way to strong winds, dust storm and occasionally followed by thundershowers. This has been the scenario in the above-mentioned states for the entire week.

These pre-Monsoon activities will continue till Monsoon actually arrives. During last 24 hours, Amritsar recorded 48.2 mm of rainfall, Ludhiana 47.8 mm, Chandigarh 8 mm, Rohtak 8 mm, and Jalandhar 18 mm. Jhajjar in Haryana also recorded good rains of 25 mm.

Normally, temperatures during this time of the year settle around 40 degree Celsius but as of now day temperatures are hovering around mid-thirties in Punjab and Haryana.

Pre-Monsoon activities will continue over the plains of North India till the arrival of Monsoon, mostly by the fag end of the month. Looks like the Monsoon air mass will intrude into the plains before the normal onset date of Monsoon. Situation will remain favorable for Monsoon to reach the last post of West Rajasthan before its scheduled date of July 15.
