The annual rainfall in the country stands at the average figure of 1187.6 mm. Winter rain is a very small fraction of this at 41.4 mm which is 3.5% of the total rainfall. This period is also the shortest span of two months compared to Monsoon of four months. For hills it is one of the main seasons wherein the region receives major rainfall. For the plains, this otherwise is the one season with the least rainfall. Here, most contribution of rainfall comes from Indo-Gangetic Plains with the state of Punjab topping the list.

The average rainfall figure for Punjab stands at 47.9 mm. The state has fared pretty well during this year as well and has crossed  its previously set record. Punjab at present is running almost 100% excess and has received 95.6 mm of rain. Looking back at the records-

In the last eight years, the state showed positive performance only in 2013. Otherwise all other years, the figures have been pretty dismal.

The reason for this year’s performance can be attributed to the winter weather systems like Western Disturbances and induced Cyclonic Circulations. This time the frequency of such systems has been really good.

Out of the 22 districts, 12 are already witnessing rainfall in large excess. Other are in the normal figure range, except for the district of Mansa which is witnessing rainfall deficit of -24%.
