Pune recorded the coolest temperature of 9.8°C today morning. The city recorded under 10°C for the second consecutive day and marginally less than yesterday’s low of 9.9°C. This temperature is lower than the one recorded at Mahabaleshwar, a hill station in the Western Ghats. Some other locations like Jeur, a village in Sholapur district and Ahmednagar (now Ahilya Nagar) in Madhya Maharashtra also recorded single-digit temperatures of 8°C and 9.4°C, respectively. Other areas like Haveli and Khadakwasla (NDA) recorded lows of 9.1°C and 8.0°C. These temperatures are 5°-6°C below the normal for the respective stations. Plains of Madhya Maharashtra are colder than the northern plains of Punjab and Haryana. Pune has recorded the lowest-ever temperature of 1.7°C on 17th January 1935.

Pune normally stays in double-digit minimum temperatures in the month of November. Yes, in December and January, the minimum does drop to under 10°C on more than one occasion. Pune is likely to witness these low temperatures for the next few days. There is no rainfall likely over Pune for the next one week or so. However, both, the maximum and minimum temperatures will rise at the start of the next week.

There is a deep depression marked over the Southwest Bay of Bengal. It is moving northwestward and may become a cyclonic storm for a brief period. The weather system has affected the wind pattern over the Southern Peninsula and its impact reached over the central parts. Under its influence, Maharashtra, North Karnataka, Telangana and neighbouring regions are swept by the easterly winds. This has depleted the moisture levels over Madhya Maharashtra covering places like Pune, Nasik, Ahmednagar, Sholapur, Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara. Along with this, the cold and dry winds from the north are getting pumped through the anticyclone over Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh. Under the combined influence of these two systems, parts of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Telangana will witness a significant drop in the morning temperatures. The second largest city of Maharashtra, Pune will observe the flavour of winter chill with single-digit minimum for the next few days.
