Pune, the 2nd largest city of Maharashtra received moderate to heavy showers yesterday. After a ‘quiet’ of over 10 days, the city witnessed pouring rains in some parts last evening. Pune-Shivajinagar and Pune-Pashan recorded 50mm and 51.5mm rainfall respectively. Lohegaon airport skipped heavy downpour and measured just 9.4mm rainfall. Earlier, 2nd week of the month was rather swampy with frequent rain and thundershowers collecting nearly 200mm of rainfall.
July is the rainiest month for Pune. However, like most other cities on the lee side of Western Ghats, Pune does not have frequent bouts of heavy rains. The city has a modest normal rainfall of 181.4mm in July and quite often struggles to achieve the target. Notwithstanding poor record of heavy rainfall, July 2022 reached the normal mark early in the 1st fortnight itself. Between 01st and 28th July, the city has gathered 352.2mm of rainfall, just short of double the normal. In the last 10 years, the city breached 300mm only once. Heaviest monthly rainfall since 2012 stands at 377mm, witnessed in 2019. With 3days to go in July, there is a fair chance to exceed this record as well.
A low level north-south trough along the coast is extending from Kerala to Konkan, across Coastal Karnataka, albeit not very pronounced as such. Already, there have been scattered showers over few other cities like Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur and Sholapur. Conditions seem favorable for moderate showers during next 48hr. Pune downward, on the leeside, Madhya Maharashtra is expected to have rain and thundershowers. Mostly, the activity will get triggered during the evening and early night hours.
