Pune receives all-time highest 24 hours rainfall in the month of December. With 53.1 mm of rain recorded on December 13, the city exceeded its monthly average of 4.8 mm.

Previously, December 22, 1942 held the record of all-time highest rain of 42.4 mm, in a span of 24 hours.

Interaction of southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea with moist winds coming from Bay of Bengal could be responsible for this unseasonal rain in Pune.

After revival and heavy rains in Tamil Nadu and parts of Kerala, Northeast Monsoon rains spread to west coast, North Interior Karnataka and Madhya Maharashtra by December 12. Moisture winds coming from Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea have now reached up to Central India.

Heavy rain began since Friday evening and caused waterlogging and massive traffic snarls across the city. Pune-Mumbai highway was the worst affected as the jam lasted for more than three hours.

Pune hardly receives any rain this month and just 3.2 mm of rainfall was recorded on December 3 last year, while the previous three years went completely dry.
