Retreating southwest monsoon has been drenching most parts of Madhya Maharashtra. While, Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, Nasik received decent showers yesterday, the cultural capital of Maharashtra- Pune was drowned with heavy showers. The city received 105mm of rainfall in 24hr, more than the monthly normal of 77.9mm. Pashan observatory also recorded 94.2mm in the past 24hr. Pune has the precedence of being deluged with heavy receding monsoon showers and was even lashed last year with 112.1mm rainfall on 15thOctober. Earlier, on 15thOctober 2022, the city registered another downpour of 78mm. One of the sprawling city of Maharashtra has recorded 265mm of rainfall in October, so far. More rains are in the offing today, tomorrow and day after, before the monsoon makes exit.
Southwest monsoon is more punishing for Konkan coast in the streaming in phase but gets more adapted to lash Madhya Maharashtra, the lee side of the Ghats, while streaming out. Monsoon has begun withdrawal from parts of Maharashtra and may vacate the remaining parts, including Mumbai and Pune, in the next 3-4days. Receding monsoon showers are always more sporadic and unpredictable too, in terms of intensity and spread.
Cyclonic circulation is marked over Arabian Sea, off Goa and Konkan coast. Another circulation over Bay of Bengal is fueling easterly winds across Madhya Maharashtra. The combined influence will churn good spread of convective clouds. Rain and thundershowers over the next 3 days, albeit more intense during next 24hr, are likely for the city and suburbs. The city will find complete clearance from the monsoon activity after 22nd October. This also will closely coincide with final withdrawal of the southwest monsoon.
