Updated on December 6, 2015: Puducherry rains are likely to get less intense as the day progresses. The region has been witnessing extremely heavy rains fueled by the low pressure area which has led to Chennai floods and Cuddalore floods.
Moderate rain will continue over the area and only isolated heavy showers are expected. But in another 24 to 48 hours, comparatively better weather conditions are expected in the region. However, light patchy rain is likely to continue over the region.
Story first published on December 5, 2015: Puducherry rains have been wreaking havoc over the entire region for the last few days. Over 400 houses have been damaged and 10,000 people have been evacuated to safer areas.
These rains have been termed as the worst in the last 100 years, as the region continues to struggle with severe inundation. Schools remain closed till December 6 and movement is restricted. While Chennai rains have subsided in the last 24 hours, Puducherry and Cuddalore continue to receive heavy rain.
In the last 24 hours, Puducherry has recorded a good 84 mm of rainfall. From December 1 to 4, Puducherry has received a mind-boggling 527 mm of rain. The union territory (UT) has already surpassed its monthly normal of 217 mm in a single spell.
On December 1, Puducherry recorded 152 mm rain; followed by 218 mm on Dec 2; and 73.1 mm on Dec 3. With 218 mm rainfall on December 2, the UT also surpassed the all-time 24-hour rainfall record of 186.7 mm, dating back to December 13, 1998.
Puducherry has also crossed its 10-year monthly rainfall record, which earlier stood at 299 mm, dating back to 2011. The all-time monthly high stands at 753.8 mm. With active Northeast Monsoon conditions and 25 days left in December, Puducherry rains could easily surpass the all-time rainfall record for December.
Puducherry rains will continue for another 2 to 3 days, thereafter conditions may improve. Northeast Monsoon lasts up to December, however, remains proactive till December 15 only. Thereafter, the intensity of rain reduces significantly, unless a cyclonic storm develops.
