More rains are expected on May 23 and 24. The states of Assam and Meghalaya witnessing some good showers, in fact, widespread showers on May 23.

Usually, southerly or southwesterly winds cause rains over the northeastern parts of India. Currently, a Cyclonic Circulation is over Bihar and another one is stationed over the Assam region. These regions are promoting the southerly, southwesterly winds towards Northeast India resulting in conditions being favourable for rains.

This time, Northeast India has not seen good Pre Monsoon activities despite being the largest contributor of rains in the country during this season. Currently, it is only Assam, and Meghalaya which have rain stats in the normal category. Mizoram is at present large deficit while others are in the deficit category.

These rains may help in decreasing the deficit but will be unable to overcome the deficit. Southwest Monsoon is around the corner and when it makes an onset over the mainland, southern parts of Northeast India also see the arrival of Monsoon.

Thus, in the next two weeks, Southwest Monsoon will begin its onset journey over Northeast India.
