Prolonged episode of winter rain in Delhi and NCR to start today evening onward

November is the transition month for the capital city, Delhi. This is the month when Delhi sees a change in temperature from double digits to single digits.

In November 2019, there have been three occasions when Delhi witnessed low minimums. The first low minimum was observed on November 12 at 11.7 degrees, then on November 20 at 11.4 degrees and finally on November 22 at 11.8 degrees.

Currently, both the maximums and minimums are a shade above normal. This fluctuation in temperature can be attributed to back to back Western Disturbances which lead to a change in wind profile.

Presently the Western Disturbance is over North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. While its induced Cyclonic Circulation is over Central Pakistan and adjoining Punjab.

As per the weathermen at Skymet Weather, Delhi will see a prolonged rainfall activity which is likely to initiate from today evening or night itself and will go on until the morning of November 28.

These rains are supported by back to back systems, one is the current Western Disturbance and another system will prevail in the upper air only. These upper air systems are more manifested in the satellite picture and the systems lead to change in wind profile as well.

By today evening there will be a change in wind direction and simultaneously the humidity levels will also rise.

Today that is on November 25 we can expect light rains only. However, tomorrow afternoon, Delhiites may see moderate showers in pockets.

As far as the temperature is concerned, the statistics are more in favour of single-digit particularly towards the fag end of November barring few exceptions.

From 2007 to 2018 there have been three occasions when the double-digit temperature has been recorded. The rest of all years in this phase witnessed single-digit temperature only in November.

We are aware of the fact that the temperatures drop after the passage of Western Disturbance only.

The dry north westerlies will resume post-Western Disturbance by the evening of November 28 itself. Come November 29, Delhiites will start feeling the chill in the air. However, the dropping of temperatures to single-digit is very likely in the first week of December only. The coming spell will not allow the minimums to drop and rather they will rise only. We can say that the winter chill over Delhi and NCR will now set in super soon.
