Delhi has not only battling dry winters this season but warm afternoons as well. On January 18, the national capital recorded day maximum at 27.7˚C, which is the second highest maximum temperature recorded in January in last decade.

In last 10 years, the highest maximum temperature in Delhi was 28˚C recorded in January 9, 2008 and January 30, 2010.

Not only this, Delhi has remained absolutely dry during the last 38 days, which is the longest dry spell during the winter season in last 5 years. Not only this, it is highly unlikely for any change in the present weather conditions. Weathermen do not foresee any weather system approaching the region in near future, thus this spell could extend even further, crashing some more records.

As a result, Delhiites would have to bear slightly warm afternoons for some more days. As reiterated by Skymet Weather, this is an unusual and extended dry spell in Delhi.

The absence of typical winter fog and elongated cold weather conditions are a result of this. Till now, we have witnessed only two episodes of dense to very dense fog, which was on January 1 and January 17.

One of the key reasons for the absence of winter rains can be attributed to the less number of Western Disturbances over Jammu and Kashmir. Winter season is mainly governed by the Western Disturbance. Although there have been series of Western Disturbances, but they were not active enough to impact the weather over plains of Northwest India including Delhi-NCR.

We have already entered into the second half of January and weathermen are not anticipating a rainy spell in 3-4 days. Though a Western Disturbance has been affecting Jammu and Kashmir but its effect is restricted to upper reaches of the state only.

A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Western Himalayas by January 22 that may give light rains over the northwestern plains including Delhi NCR on January 23.
