The month of May has started on a warm note in Hyderabad. The day temperature during the first three days of the month touched 40°C but clouds and light rain in some areas of the city pulled down the maximum to 36.3°C on Monday.
Generally, Hyderabad enjoys good weather conditions throughout the year. The winter season is not severe and monsoon is pleasant. Summer is the only time when some discomfort is experienced in the city.
March to May is the summer season in Hyderabad, with May being the hottest month. The monthly average maximum during May in the city is 39.2°C, while the minimum settles at 26.4°C. At times the day temperature in the city is seen exceeding 40°C. But pre-monsoon showers pick up towards the middle of the month, pulling down the temperatures. Towards the end of May, pre-monsoon showers become more frequent before Southwest Monsoon makes its entry in Kerala.
According to the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the highest maximum observed in last ten years is 44.5°C, recorded on May 12, 2010. This incidentally is also the all-time high day temperature.
May is also the rainiest month of the summer season. The average monthly rainfall is 38.6 mm, which is double the April rainfall of 19 mm. This is due to frequent pre-monsoon showers.
In the last four days, the city has only received traces of rain. However, as we approach the middle of the month, rainfall activity will pick up and by the end of the month Hyderabad may exceed the monthly average rainfall.
