Mumbai and its suburbs received pre-monsoon showers, albeit patchy and scattered. Actually, the Konkan coast, from Sindhudurg to Mumbai, observed light rainfall. These showers are precursor to the arrival of monsoon which has a schedule date of 11th June. More showers are likely and may become regular feature, till the arrival of the monsoon, expected around the due date.
A small-scale cyclonic circulation is likely to form over Konkan region in another 48 hours. Currently, the feeble trough is seen along the coast, triggering light pre-monsoon showers. Moderate to heavy rains are expected all along the Konkan coast between 09th and 12th June. Intensity and spread will be more on 10th and 11th June. Mumbai is likely to have moderate rainfall on 09th and 10th of June. Heavy rains are expected on 11th and 12th June. Typical Mumbai rains may lash the city and suburbs, during this period and may usher the monsoon, right on due date.
Mumbai experiences heavy rainfall at the time of onset of monsoon. Monsoon systems forming over the Bay of Bengal speed up the surge along the West Coast in general and Konkan & Goa in particular. However, no such system is likely to form over Bay of Bengal in the next week or ten days. Accordingly, the financial capital may not continue with any significant rains after 12th June. Still, the city will not dry up completely and light to moderate, intermittent rainfall will continue, post-onset of monsoon.
