North India is gradually entering the spring season but winter is definitely over in South India. According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, this region has been receiving pre-monsoon showers with parts of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra recording around 40 mm of rain within the month of March.

The upper air cyclonic circulation over Odisha and neighbouring areas has become insignificant now, which brought good amounts of showers in Odisha, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in the last few days. In the past 24 hours, only light rain was observed in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, Telanga and adjoining areas. However, few places like Kurnool, Nanded and Gulbarga received good amounts of rain.

  • In Maharashtra Yeotmal received 13 mm, Parbhani 15.4, Nanded 28. 5, Chandrapur 5.5 mm, Malegaon 5 mm, Aurangabad 2.6 mm, Akola 1 mm, Solapur 0.2 and Pune traces of rain.
  • In Andhra Pradesh, Nizamabad received 0.2 mm and Kurnool 5 mm of rain.
  • In Karnataka, Bellary and Gulbarga received 22.4 mm and 14 mm of rain, respectively.
  • In Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Cochin received 2 mm, Kodaikanal 10 mm and Kanyakumari 1.6 mm of precipitation.
  • In Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh few places including Raipur, Bhopal and Jabalpur received some light rain.

The intensity of rain will remain less today in these regions and pick up thereafter. However, extreme southern peninsula including south interior Karnataka, parts of Kerala and Tamil Nudu will get a break for few days.

As has been reiterated by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, this pre-monsoon activity is due to persistent discontinuity of winds along with high temperatures and especially differential temperature profile of the sea and land surfaces. The rain commences in the later part of the day and the showers are generally frequent yet short and accompanied by thunderstorms.
